U.S.A. RAILWAYMEN

PROPOSED GENERAL STRIKE.

FINAL EFFORT TO AVERT IT. (Rec. 8.20). NEW YORK, May 15. After conferring with President Truman, the representatives of the Railway Brotherhoods and railway companies have re-opened negotiations in an attempt to avert a na-tion-wide strike, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday. Reports from all' parts of the country indicate that any railway strike, on top of the general dislocation caused by' the coal strike, would cause a further disastrous disruption to the nation's economy. Large industrial centres are threatened with possible food shortages'. The New York authorities declared that the city would be tied in a knot within a week if railway deliveries were suspended.
