HOTEL NELSON THEFT

Jewellery Valued at £l,OOO YOUNG MAN COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. P.A. NELSON, May 15. Pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to charges of breaking, entering and the theft of jewellery valued at • £l,OOO from the Hotel Nelson, James Alexander - Kennedy, aged 25, was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. Accused in a statement, showed he was formerly employed at the hotel as a porter. Being short of money after a period of unemployment, he decided to try and get some from the hotel bedrooms. Last Friday morning he entered the hotel by the front door, went to the second floor, where he entered a room and took a jewel box and its contents. He then left the hotel by the main door. On inspection of the box later, he was surprised to see the jewellery he had taken, and then realised it was very valuable. He removed a gold coin from one piece and sold it to a local resident.

Detective Sergeant Murray’s evidence indicated that accused was traced through the sale of the coin at M'otueka.
