TEACHER FINED FOR CANING BOY. (Rec. 9.0.) SYDNEY, May 15. When a teacher at St. James Patrician Brothers’ School, at Glebe, Sydney, ’gave one of his pupils too vigorous a caning, the boy sustained such injuries that the Child Welfare Department took up his case. The sequel occurred in the Children’s Court to-day, when Brother Nicholas Duffy, aged 34, was lined“£lo for assaulting the schoolboy. Unusual precautions were taken to prevent a leakage of information from the Court, which was in camera, as even voluntary social welfare workers were excluded. RESCUES FROM SUNKEN SUMARINES. MELBOURNE, May 15. Eight members of the Royal Australian Navy narrowly escaped death recently when at least nine Japanese submarines which were being towed at night across the Inland Sea ot Japan for scuttling broke away in a heavy storm. Two submarines sank after crashing against the side of the Australian destroyer Quiberon. Eight Australians who were on four of the drifting submarines were rescued after several attempts, during which a launch was badly damaged. Eventually some submarines which haa to be beached were destroyed by demolition charges, and others were sunk by gunfire.
