FOOD FOR EUROPE
COAST TRADES COUNCIL’S
! APPEAL. I NEED FOR COLLECTORS. “A former New Zealand trade unionist now on the staff of U.N.R.R.A. and stationed in Warsaw, has sent a personal appeal to the NewZealand Federation of Labour to do all possible to get food supplies rushed to the famine-stricken countries of Europe,” says' a statement issued by the executive of the West Coast j Trades Council. “The correspondent states that in Foland the Government has made a decision which literally passes sentence of death upon many thousands of people,” added the executive statement. “Unless food supplies coming into, the country are increased beyond present expecta-I tions, no rations will be issued to the/ aged and unfit. These people must! starve. Only by this means can key 1 workers and people who will be useful for planting next season’s food crops, be sufficiently provided for. Governments of other countries in Europe are faced with a similar situation'.
“It was because of this first-hand report that the National Council of the Federation of Labour requested the New Zealand Government to organise a campaign with the object of cpllecxpg and dispatching as much rood as possible to the famine areas. “The Trades Council will co-oper-ate with the local Food for Europe Committee, and urges trade unionists everywhere to participate in the food drive and assist to save the lives of people who, but for our efforts, will surely die. Collectors for the Greymouth food drive on April G are urgently needed. Volunteers should kend their names to P. Shallcrass, P.O. Box 33, Greymouth”.
