MR BEVIN’S ESTIMATE
Communists’ Object TO UPSET THE ELECTIONS '(Rec. 9.30) LONDON, March 30. ■ The Flon. Mr E. Bevin, Foreign Secretary, in a speech at Bristol, referred to Sunday’s Greek elections. He said that it Was clear that, whatever happened in Greece the Communists intended to boycott and to upset the elections. Greece was in a very difficult position, lying, as it did, between two great Allies with different viewpoints. Greece, was, as a result being subjected to external propaganda. Mr Bevin related how he had consulted the Cabinet when he asked for advice as to whether the elections in Greece should be postponed. He revealed. that the Cabinet were unanimously agreed that the elections must be held as they were planned, or, otherwise, the whole situation in Greece would deteriorate.
Mr Bevin said he believed that, the E.A.M. (Left) would have won many seats if they had participated in the elections. “However.” he said, “if that party feels that it cannot obtain a majority, there is no justification for its preventing the other citizens from exercising the franchise.”
