ATOMIC POWER
To Drive Battleships SAYS U.S. ADMIRAL. (Rec. 9.30) WASHINGTON, March 30. The United States peacetime research programme will cost 47 million dollars. It includes investigation for use of atomic energy as a nropulsive force for battleships, development of nuclear munitions, and the education of personnel in the application of nuclear energy, Rear Admiral Harold Bowen told members, .of the Association for the Advancement, of Science. He emphasised the dost sibility of atomic driven battleships in the near future, and pointed out., such a vessel would have an unheardof speed and cruising radius, dictated only by the amount of provisions that could be carried. The Navy also hoped to develop atomic bomb carrying planes, with speed of well over a thousand miles an hour.
