MESSENGER TROPHY TO LISTLESS. The Greymouth Yacht Club conducted two events on the Grey River yesterdaj’ afternoon, the first race foi’ the Canter Trophy and an event where crews ballotted for boats. Conditions were fair, there being a light sou’-westerly breeze and a dead lowtide. The sail-off for the Messenger Trpohy, between the two dead-heated boats, Listless and Mascotte, was sailed in conjunction with the first race, and resulted in a win for H. Longstaff in Listless. All races were interesting and the finishes close. Results were as follows:—
Canter Trophy: Cygnet (F. Thompson, Bmin) 1; Idle Hour (D. Smith, scr) 2; Listless (H. Longstaff, 45sec) 3; Mascotte (W. Longstaff, scr) 4; Vagabond (D. Hodgkinson, scr) 5. Messenger Trophy Re-sail: Listless (H. Longstaff, 45sec) 1; Mascotte (W. Longstaff, scr) 2. Change-about Race: Mascotte (D. Hodgkinson, scr) 1; Cygnet (D. Smith 3min) 2; Idle Hour (H. Four -byes from a delivery from Toshack set the applause going again. Mcßae brought 50 up for 105 minutes’ play by hitting one from O’Reilly high to Barnes at extra long on, the fieldsman just failing to take the difficult catch. With the total at 54, McCool relieved O’Reilly. With his second delivery, he had Mcßae, who had scored eight, caught by Mouieman at extra long on. .The innings, which occupied 110 minutes, closed at 3.40 p.m. for the paltry total of 54, leaving Australia victorious by the wide margin of an innings and 103 runs. All five of the Australian bowlers employed came out with flattering figures, Toshack taking two wickets for six off 10 overs; Miller two for six off six overs; O’Reilly three for 19 off seven overs; and McCool one for none off two balls. The attendance on Saturday was a record for a cricket match at the Basin Reserve. The number who passed through the turnstiles was 14,850, but season ticket holders, and special schoolboys’ tickets swelled the crowd to 16,000. The sum of £1962 was taken at the gates.
