Mrs. D. Neill, who has been visiting Auckland arrived back on Wednesday accompanied by her niece, Miss Noim< Goldsmith. Mr. Rutherford of Otago was a visitor to Westport this week.

The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre leaves or Monday for Wellington, where he wil. attend the Education Boards’ Conference, to be held on April 2, 3 and 4. Mr. A. Meek is visiting the North Island. Cpl. Fred Herring, G.M., accompanied by his mother, arrived home on Thursday night from Christchurch where he has been under medical treatment. Mrs. R. Patterson and family arrived back last night from a holiday in Auckland, where her mother and father reside. Messrs E. and S. Granville of Wanganui stayed overnight in Westport before proceeding on to Greymouth. Mesdames R. Lucas and Mrs. Davis and Miss Marie King were visitors to Greymouth yesterday. Mr. Dick Kilkenny is back in Westport after a business trip to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. J. Kelly returned last night from Christchurch. Frank' Evans, who served in the Navy on minesweepers and launches arrived home last night on discharge from the service. Mr. and Mrs. Gay, who have been spending a few days in Hastings, returned on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Chaplin arrived from Christchurch on Thursday. Mr. Chaplin is taking up a position with Mouatt and Kennedy. Mr. Joe Garner, late of the s.s. Totara, is spending a few days’ vacation with his sister, Mrs. W. James, North

Beach. RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION. At the monthly meeting of the Westport Ratepayers’ Association there was considerable discussion regarding the lack of progress as far as new industries are concerned. The secretary stated that girls were leaving the district because there was nothing to keep them there, although the high cost of living in the cities and ! larger towns took most of their wages. |Mr. Fairbairn asked how manufacturers were to be enticed to start industries in the smaller centres. Members expressed appreciation of the attention being given to footpaths and roads in the town. A letter was received from the Town Clerk in connection with a request to the Mayor to call a public meeting to decide on a war memorial at Westport. It stated that the Mayor had decided to wait for a statement of the Government’s policy, especially as to subsidies. When this was known, he would be pleased to convene a meeting as suggested. The chairman said the Association should support the new R.S.A. hall as a fitting war memorial. It was agreed to support the R.S.A., if that body was going to pursue a club room as a war memorial. NEW RAILWAY GARAGE. The building known as the old town shed is being remodelled iitto a garage for servicing the railway ’buses to be used on the new country services. NUMBERING OF HOUSES. The need for the numbering of houses mentioned some weeks ago in these columns, was again referred to at the monthly meeting of the Ratepayers’ Association, and it was decided to bring the matter before the Council once again. LAWN TENNIS. The final of the Ces. Walker Cup Competition, between St. John’s Tuis and St. John’s Kiwis .will be played this afternoon. To-morrow, a challenge match lor the P'ullar Cup, between St. John’s (holders), and Granity (challengers), will be decided on. the St. courts.
