HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, March 6.
Fishermen have been on the lookout for the past two weeks for runs of Inanga, parent of the whitebait, which take place in February and March. The runs have been poor, but with a continuance of the weather, good runs should take place. Upon the runs depends the success of the next whitabait season.
On the north beach, near the town boundary, the sea has been cutting into .the main bank, and there is a face ten to fourteen feet high. Near the wharf, the beach has built up, and the sea to-day is further from the town than for the past twelve years. It is quite a walk from Revell Street to high tide mark, a striking contrast to conditions this time last year, when the sea was close to Revell street.
The Gael arrived at 1.30 p'.m. on Wednesday; from Jackson Bay. She towed a Public Works launch from the bay to Hokitika. The towline was cast off in the roadstead and the launch proceeded to Greymouth. The Gael also brought equipment from Jackson Bay for the Rope Construction Company. She is loading silver pine posts and is to sail for Wellington at two o’clock on Thursday afternoon.
