CANADA’S BIRTHRATE
Effects of Decline
(Rec. 5.5). OTTAWA, February 14. The Canadian Statistics Bureau reports that it estimates that Canada’s population will be at its maximum before the end of this century. It will be fifteen millions about the yeai 1990, and after that year it will decline slowly, if present world trends persist towards decline in births. The report showed also that Canada’s fertility and mortality rates have coincided with those of the other countries which have shown a decline both in fertility and in mortality during the last century. Canada’s 1941 census showed that her population was 11,490,880. The population of the Dominion increased rapidly after the year 1900, with an impetus of European migration, but when immigration restrictions were imposed, that upward rate became progressively smaller.
