Resignations Received

I DEPUTY-MAYOR AND COUNCILLOR. Two resignations, addressed to the Mayor, were received at last night’s meeting of the Westport Borough Council, both effective from February IS. Cr. C. R. Howard tendered his resignation because of the pressure of business. Cr. Howard was hirst elected to the Council in May, 1941, and became Deputy-Mayor after he topped the poll in the 1944 elections. It had not been Cr. Howard’s intention to seek re-election in 1944, but he gave way to pressure. He has been Chairman of the Finance Committee the Gas and Electric Committee, and the Accounts and Revenue Committee. Cr. A. McNeur resigned because of his transfer from the district. He joined the Council in 1944, and has been a member of the Accounts and Revenue, and the Gas and ElectricCommittees, as well as the Council’s representative on the Library Committee. Both resignations were received with expressions of regret from the Mayor (Mr J. M. Robertson; and Councillors. The Council approved arrangements made by the Town Clerk. Mr P. C. Morgan (as returning officer) for an extraordinary election to fill the vacancies, to be held on March 16. Nominations will close at neon on March 5, and the District Electors’ Roll at 5 p.m. on March 2. I
