OIL KING OPPOSED

FOR U.S. NAVY OFFICE TRUMAN’S NOMINATION QUESTIONED WASHINGTON, Feb. 11. A stir has been caused by President Truman nominating Mr. Edwin W. Pauley as Assistant Secretary of ;he Navy. Mr. Pauley’s nomination is not acceptable to many Americans because his fortune is based on oil. The Navy has vast oil interests. The public fears a repetition of the Teapot Dome scandal, like that which rocked the Harding administration after the last war, says the “NewYork Times”. There has been an unceasing fight for years to defend from private exploitation, oil reserves which the Navy needs. Mr. Pauley’s oil interests disqualify him from a post in the Navy Department. They are a handicap of which he cannot now divest himself. The bitterest criticism of Mr. Pauley’s nomination has come from the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Ickes. He treated a ■Senate Committee of Investigation to an unprecedented spectacle of a Cabinet Minister publicly opposing the desires of his “boss” at Whitehouse.
