WATAROA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) Mr. Gaffney was a visitor to Wataroa during the week-end in the interests of his refrigerating company. Hay-making is in full swing in South Westland, and many farmers are building up stocks of winter feed. A successful welcome home social and dance for Flying Officer P. Nolan and Corporal A. Heveldt was held in Wataroa, recently. Music was provided by the Ross Orchestra, and Mr. Bert Stevens was a capable M.C. Mr. Malcolm Mcßride welcomed the guests of the evening, and Messrs Nolan and Curtain also spoke. The novelty dance was won by Miss P. Mcßride and Mr. A. Nolan, while Miss C. Minehan and partner won the Monte Carlo, prizes for both being donated by Messrs Harper and A- K. Vincent. Refreshments were donated by Mr. J. O. Byrne, and an excellent supper was served by the ladies’ committee. Among the visitors at the dance were Mr. Bullock of Greymouth and Miss Margaret Rowe of the Franz Josef Hostel. This dance was the last of its kind which will be put on in Wataroa, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded all who had helped in this work, especially the Social Committee. Mr. Albert Vincent, who has a drapery and store business, is at present on a visit to Bruce Bay. Miss B. Giles, in company with Waikukupa residents, went north on Saturday to meet Sergeant Gibb on his return from the Middle East.
