HARIHARI NOTES

I The death''of Mr. Frank Haddock which occurred at Harihari early on Tuesday morning last marked the passing of one of the best known and most respected resident of this district. He was born at Ross 69 years ago. His wife predeceased him in 1931 and he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Walsh, Harihari, and Kitty of Christchurch, and three sons, Francis, Patrick, and Eugene. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Ann’s Church at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning by the Rev. Father. ID. Healy of Ross. The cortege which was lengthy left the Church at 2 p.m. for the local cemetery and was attended by the majority of residents of Harihari. Visitors were also present from Hokitika, Ross and Waltaha in the north, and Wataroa, Waiho and Weheka in the south. Rev. Father Healy also officiated at the graveside. The race meeting which' was postponed because of adverse weather conditions, the previous week, tool: place on Saturday afternoon and before the third race was run, rain commenced to fall,becoming heavier throughout the remainder of the afternoon. The last three races on the programme had to be abandoned. During the day, the events were announced over a loud-speaker system by Mr. H. Reynolds, jnr., of Waitaha. He added considerable interest and amusement to the outing by announcing the arrival of man;.' prominent persons on the ground (such as the Mayor of Wataroa, Waiho Lodge, Weheka etc.). Despite the heavy rain, a sweepstake chop was held. Considerable praise is due to the secretary and to members of the committee who conducted a successful meeting without a hitch. Praise is also due to the band of lady helpers who were in charge of the tea-rooms and stalls.
Warrant Officer S-meardon and Graham Hunt who have been tne guests of Mrs. E. Diedrich of Evans Creek, have left on return to Auckland.
A mild epidemic of measles is being experienced on the Flat at present, and has affected many people, both young and old. Mr? Duncan, McLean of Greymouth was a visitor on Saturday last. Mi-. Jim Lucas of Palmerston North, is at present a visitor to ’TTarihari. Mr. Carl Hende has returned' frbni his visit to Blenheim. Mrs. Finlay of Grey town, Wellington, is at present visiting friends at Harihari. Mr. and Mrs. D. Graham of Franz Josef were week-end visitors. •Mr. A. Robertson has left for Reefton, where he will meet his brisrn<->' who has arrived in New Zemand after service overseas. Messrs T. and E. Haddock, Coyle Bros, of Hokitika and John Hansbury of Ross attended the funeral of the late Mr. Frank Haddock on Wednesday. Mr. Vroblfiski and family who have been on a visit to Greymouth have returned' home. Mr. and Mrs. T. Adamson of Karangaroa were recent visitors. Mr. Linskey and family who have been spending the school holidays at Harihari leave for Christchurch this week.
Messrs E. and M. Shearer, Wainihinihi who have been on 'a visit here, are returning home this week. Mrs. W. Berry and daughter of Hokitika are on a visit to this district.
Mr. Dave Berry has returned to Napier.
Mr and Mrs. P. J. Minehan have returned to Hokitika.
