— — LONDON, January 4. Private Theodore Schurch, who Was found guilty on nine charges of treachery and one of desertion with intent, to join the enemy, has been hanged at Pentonville prison. LONDON, January 5.
Twenty-three people were killed in Leon, in Mexico, in riots by right wing parties following the municipal elections in the city. Federal troops were called in to quell the disturbances, which are still continuing. SAIGON, January 4.
The countryside around Saigon is aflame as Annamese, resisting the advancing French troops, apparently are pursuing a scorched-earth policy, reports the Associated Press correspondent. President Truman has been asked by the meat packing industry to call a conference of representatives of the industry to avert a threatened na-tion-wide s trike in the industry. Strikes are also expected in the International Harvester Corporation’s works in New Jersey, al the mines in Salt Lake City, and in the Goodyear Company’s large plants in Ohio. LISBON, January 4. The French ship “Athos IL,” acting as an American troopship, has entered harbour in the Azores after suffering damage in a violent gale. She lost a propeller and twelve lifeboats. Twenty-three of her 3,000 passengers have been admitted to hospital. NEW YORK, January 4. The liner “Queen Mary” has completed her ninth and last Atlantic crossing since V-E-Day as a troop carrier, and will soon be assigned exclusively to bringing back European brides of American servicemen. It is estimated that there are 40,000 brides and uncounted thousands of children in Britain and Europe awaiting transport. The liner will at Southampton be equipped with hundreds of cribs and bottle sterilizers and perhaps baby blankets and special cooking facilities and probably foods,
