40 NZ WAR BRIDES EXPECTED. > P.A. AUCKLAND, January 4. More than 40 wives of New Zealand ■ servicemen, the largest number of war brides to arrive at Auckland on ‘ one ship, are on the Blue Funnel Line vessel “Tyndareus,” which is due from Liverpool on January 12. They are destined for many different, parts • of the Dominion. Some of the wives 1 are accompanied by their husbands and children. One hundred passeng- : ers on the ship include some R.N.Z. 1 A.F. personnel. The “Tyndareus,” which was built in 1916, is a 11,361ton twin-screw steamer. 1 ARMY DISCHARGES. MANY THOUSANDS TO BE COMPLETED. 1 P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. Many thousands of Army personnel ■ at present on indefinite leave with- ! out pay, will receive their discharges 1 shortly. Instructions to this effect ’ have been received from Army ' Headquarters by Southern Military District Headquarters and various 1 Area Offices which will carry out the i actual machinery work. The in- , structions will be put into effect al- ; most immediately. Classes are: (a) Personnel of the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. re- ’ turned to New Zealand from overseas and who have been placed on indefinite leave without bay will be ~ discharged from the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. ; (b) Personnel of the New Zealand \ Temporary Staff held in area pools or on indefinite leave without pay will be discharged from the Temporary Staff. Those under the age of 40 years on June 1, 1946, and of medical grades one or two who were formerly on the strength of.a Territorial unit will be transferred to the reserve of the New Zealand Defences Forces at the same time as being discharged from the New Zealand Temporary Staff, (c) Personnel of the New Zealand Women’s Auxiliary Army Corns are to be discharged, (d) Personnel of the Territorial Forces who on June 1, 1946, will have reached the age of 40 years and those under such age who are not of medical grades one or two are to be discharged from the Territorial Forces. (e i All persons who are carried on the strength of an Area Pool and who have not been posted to a unit of the armed forces are to be discharged with the following exceptions: (1) Single personnel who on January 1, 1946, will be under the age of 36 years, have never been posted to a unit and who have never been examined by a duly constituted Medical Board or if they were so examined were classified grade 1. (2) Any person who has failed to render service required of him under the provisions of the National Service Emergency Regulations. As officers, including New Zealand Army Nursing Service and New Zealand Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, are dealt With by notice in the “Gazette,” the provisions of the memorandum do not apply to them. Reason for discharge -will be shown. In each case a special order is to be issued by Area Offices. Action to complete discharge will not be taken until all administrative requirements such as medical boarding and clearing pf kit are completed. BUS GOES OVER BANK. NAPIER, January 3. Six passengers and the driver received injuries when a bus plunged over a bank between Napier and Taradale this morning. Two passengers were admitted to hospital. They were Mesdames M. Miller and M. Davis, both of Greenmeadows. No one was injured seriously. MEASLES EPIDEMIC. AUCKLAND, January 14. The measles epidemic in the Auckland district is now considered to have passed its peak, but its incidence is still widespread in some areas, particularly in the North Shore suburbs, although the number of severe cases is not reported to be unduly large. At least one child has died frorii measles and resulting complications. The acting-medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital (Dr. J. S. Hudson) said that some serious cases had been admitted to the hospital, but the number was not alarming. In view of the incidence of the epidemic the number of deaths had been extremely low. Another Auckland doctor said the epidemic was the worst for eight years.
