GIRLS SMUGGLED

FROM AUSTRALIA TO MANILA BRISBANE, Jan. 4 Fifteen Australian girls, employed by the American forces in Brisbane, have been "smuggled” out of Australia to Manila. They left secretly by a Douglas Dakota, transport plane from Eagle Farm aerodrome at 4.30 a.m., on Wednesday. American Army tranpsort vehicles had picked them up from their homes an hour earlier. The Australian Customs Department recently refused them passports and if the girls leave the United States forces they will be stranded' without passports. The girls, who were empolyed in confidential secretarial work for American officers, have been posted to similar duties. They will be paid £740 a year. Possibly many will be taken on to Japan and thence to America.
