OPEN-CAST MINES

WORK OVER HOLIDAYS P.A. WELLINGTON,-Jan. 3. Three Waikato open-cast coal mines, Kimihia, Glen Massey, and Glen Afton, have worked almost continuously over the holidays to maintain coal supplies for the railways while the underground mines were closed, said the Under-Secretary for Mines (Mr. C. H. Benney) last evening. There was not a single case of absenteeism. Every man who had agreed to work through the holidays —the majority of opencast mine worker's —had turned out for work each day. The normal"output of the three mines had been maintained and 600. tons of coal had been produced daily since the underground mines were closed for the holiday period. Sixty per cent, of this had been consigned to the railways, and with the exception of Christmas Day coai trains had been hauling stocks from Huntly and Ngaruawahia to the Auckland, Frankton, and Taumarum depots daily.
