U.S.A. IN PACIFIC
BUSINESS EXPANSION POLICY. (Rec. 9.5.) HONOLULU, Jan. 2. Mr. Maury Maverick, Chairman of the Smaller Warplants Corporation, has arrived here, en route for Washington, after a tour of New Zealand, Australia, the and China. He said he will recommend to President Truman a programme of development to aid American business in the Pacific area. Mr. Maverick declared: “First we need to have a firm, generous policy. Then I want to coin a new word for the Pacific, “Ada,” meaning the closest co-opera-tion between Anglo-Dominion and American interests. Further, the United States must keep its installations in the Pacific.” NEW YORK, January 2. ' The United States has distributed to all American nations except Argentina, proposals for an inter-American defence treaty, for discussion at a conference of western hemisphere Foreign Ministers at Rio de Jamero in March or April. The State Department does not intend signing a military agreement with the Argentine Government. It proposes . thac American Republics refrain in international relations from threat or use of force against territorial integrity or political independence of any State.
