National Congress Majority
LONDON, January 3. The New Delhi (Government) radio stated: In the elections for a new' central Legislative Assembly for India, the National Congress Party has gained a majority, having polled over three-jifths of the votes cast. The final figures on the strength of the parties are: Congress 56, a gain of 36. Moslem League 30, a gain of six. The new Assembly will in addition include 40 nominated members, 26 officials and 16 non-officials.
The Congress Party won 59.6 per cent, of the total votes cast in all constituencies throughout India. The Congress Party in non-Moslem constituencies won 91.3 per cent, of the total votes. The Moslem League won 27.6 per cent, of the total votes cast in all constituencies and 86.6 per cent, of the total cast in Moslem constituencies. The Congress Partf won all the non-Moslem seats and the Moslem League all the Moslem seats. It is reliably stated that Mr. Casey in a series of protracted talks with Mr. Gandhi has been striving to bring about a round table conference of three—Lord Wavell, Mr. Gandhi and Dr. Jinnah, says the Exchange Telegraph Agency’s Calcutta correspondent. Mr. Casey has now given up hope that he will be able to arrange a tripartite conference in which, all the parties would put their cards on the.table stating the minimum demands of those they represent. Mr. Casey had hoped to make arrangements before 'leaving Calcutta. Dr. Jinnah refused to travel to Calcutta.
