ARMY TRUCIUTRAGEDY P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct. 5 An Army truck, conveying twentymen from Trentham Army Ordnance Depot, going on daily duty to a post in the Belmont area west of Hutt Valley, crashed down a three-hundred foot ' hillside this morning. ’ The casualty list is:— Killed Private R. Cameron (Wellington). Died of of injuries in hospital : Lance Coropal T. R. Beach (Nelson). Seriouslv injured: Corporal N. A. Prier, driver of the truck (Shannon), back injuries. Injured: Sergeant T. A. B. Claridge 'Levin), shock' and head iniuries; Corporal W. M. Hugh Kilbirnie. Wellington), broken ribs; Corporal J. R. Parker (Hawera), Privates N. F. Pond (Dunedin), V. E. T. Nicholas (Hastings). R. J. Willis (Patea), C. C. Rankin (address unknown). The following were taken to the Trentham Military Hospital for ob-servation:—-Sergeant J. A. Pinkham (Christchurch), Sergeant E. C. S. Ellery (Wellington), Corporals H. W'. Dillon (Hunterville), A. R. MansfieM (Wellington), Lance Corporal T. George (Ohan), Privates F. A. Ellis (Lower Hutt), G. H. Clough (New Plvmouth), J. A. Hockly (Ashurst). FACTORY CONTROLS END P.A. WELLINGTON. Oct. 5The Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) announced revocation of four factory controls, including the Women’s and Girls’ UnderwemManufacture Control Notice 1943, and Women’s Footwear Control Order 1943. These controls imposed simplified standard Specifications . R.S.A. VERSUS S.P.A. P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct. 5 “We welcome the statement, bv the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association that it is a non-pohtical organisation and also that is dissociates itself from our organisation, said the Services’ Political Association in a statement last night. “As many ot our members are actively connected with the Returned Services’ Association we do not. wish to infer any alliance either of organisation or principle. Whereas the Returned Services’ Association exists to further sectional interests of returned senvicemen, the new organisation has been founded primarily to awaken among ex-service personnel a sense of political consciouness. Its members will be afforded the opportunity Io study, and examine current political thought and express their opinions fearlessly on all major political issues, in the common interest, and on a wider basis than the constitution of the Returned Services’ Association permits.” STUDENTS FREED OF DIRECTION P.A. x WELLINGTON. Oct. 5 Mr. McLagan stated students and teachers would not be subject to compulsory manpower direction during the Christmas holidays. Plenty of seasonal work was available. Students desiring holiday work should see the local Manpower Officer.
