5,719 CASES OF CLOTHING GOING. P.A. WELLINGTON, October 4. Due to load cargo for the Middle East at New Zealand ports this month, the “Marie Bakke” will take to Europe all clothing which New Zealand has been collectin" to help to reduce the distress in Europe in the coming Winter. The vessel will load the clothing at Timaru (where she is due from Sydney on October 9). and at Wellington and Auckland. Her agents expect to dispatch her finally about November 3, so she should be discharging at whatever Mediterranean port she is directed to towards the end of that month. The shipping of the goods is being arranged by the Ministry of Sunnly. Great difficulty was encountered in obtaining a shi" even though there are other essential goods to go to .the Middle East from New Zealand, and though the “Marie Bakke” will be full. The second-hand civilian clothing and footwear, which has been collected in New Zealand amounts to 1,294,720 pounds, and fills 5,719 cases and 850 bales. At the request of U.N.R.R.A., quantities will be consigned as follows:—To Poland 492,000 pounds (40 per cent.) to Yugoslavia 406,560 nounds (30 per cent); to Greece, 169,680 pounds (15 per cent); to Czechoslovakia, 143,920 nounds (10 per cent); to Albania, 82,320 pounds (5 per cent). In addition to civilian goods collected in the bio; drive, the “Marie Bakke” will take to Europe £160,000 worth of used Army clothing. blankets, and footwear purchased by U.N.R.R.A.
