ARGENTINE UNREST
Students Versus Government
BUENOS AIRES, October 4. A students’ strike flared into open fighting this afternoon, when the police armed with clubs, and tear gas bombs broke into university buildings' at Laplata, in an effort to eject students, who had been barricaded in since October 2. (Rec. 9.40.) BUENOS AIRED, Oct. 4. A few minutes before the attack on the Argentine Universitv, students at Laplata, Cordoba, . Sante F'e and Tuchuman, also those in Buenos Aires were firmly in control of all university buildings. At Buenos Aires’, students broadcast they would hold out no matter at what cost. NEW YORK, October 4. A New York “Times’s” correspondent at Buenos Aires stated: Over thirtv thousand students in Argentina’s six national universities have gone on strike, thus taking a lead in Argentine’s people’s struggle to regain freedom, completely disregarding the efforts undei- way to reach compromise between the Government and the university councils. The students took matters into their own hands, and began a movement they hope will develop into a vast campaign of civil disobedience. Hundreds of students and professors barricaded themselves in buildings in Buenos Aires universities. A large group of policemen besieged the buildings. They cut off light and water supply. An Associated F’ress correspondent reported the police later were withdrawn in order to avoid possible violence. Yesterday an engineering building was attacked by a group of armed men. They bred about thirty shots at students inside. Two students were wounded. The engineering building is located directly across a street from the scretariat of labour, of which Senor Peron is secretary. Therefore most Argentinians have no doubts where the attack originated. The Government instituted a censorship on outgoing press despatches relating to the strike, but lifted the ban after a protest by the American Charge d’Affaires. At Washington, the Assistant-Sec-retary of State, Mr. Acheson, announced the United States has recommended a postponement of the InterAmerican Conference scheduled to open at Rio De Janeiro on November 20. He said it was because Argentina repudiated hemisphere obligations. He added the United States Government felt it would not properly negotiate or sign with the present Argentine regime a treaty of military assistance for which the conference was called. In a Note 'to Brazil, suggesting postponement, the United States had emphasised that, in view of great importance attached to the treaty negotiations, they should proceed as rapidly as possible. Mr. Acheson ' revealed the United States was consulting other American Governments regarding Argentina’s position. A Brazilian Foreign Office spokesman said 'Brazil agreed to the postponement of the conference.
