WATAROA NOTES
— ■<- (Our Own Correspondent)
The young people are sponsoring a dance this (Saturday) evening at the Wataroa Public Hall, and a large gathering is expected. The Ross Orchestra is to perfbrm, and as there now are quite a number of our returned servicemen back home, it is felt that these gatherings are very appropriate for them. The Spring sale of live stock at the Wataroa Yards is now only a month distant, and many butchers and others are already looking forward to it with interest. Store cattle are to-day very scarce, and this opportunity to obtain such is sure to be embraced eagerly by people in many parts of Westland. From far South Westland, seyferal lines of forward cattle are expected to be entered for this sale, and they are sure to be of an attractive type.
The sawmill workers will be glad to know that they have at last received their wet-time clause. It seems all the timber mills in the country except those cutting exotic timber, will come under the new arrangement.
Good catches of whitebait have been made in the Paringa, Mahitahi, Jacobs and Blue Rivers. On Monday, seventy boxes of the fish went north to market, bj r road, and a couple of aeroplane loads from the Paringa, sent by Glass and Party.Wataroa and Harihari districts have so far experienced only poor catches. Dairy farmers in these parts v’e beginning to busy themselves with their herds which are now coming into profit day by day. By the end of this month the dairy factories will be quite busy. Butter stocks are low and butter prices are this season to be higher, so that the old “cocky” has a broad smile and a taut muscle.
