A London cablegram announced the death of Count John McCormack, the Irish tenor. He was born in 1884.

Mr M. C. Cribb, who has been discharged from the R.N.Z.A.F., will take up duties with the Railways Department, Greymouth, next Monday.

Private W. Sharp, formerly of Tainui Street, Greymouth, who is serving with the New Zealand forces in Italy, is seriously ill, according to advice received by his relations in Greymouth.

The death of Mr David Garing, aged 67, of Waimangaroa, occurred at the Buller Hospital on Saturday evening. .He leaves his wife, two sons, David (Greymouth), and William (Waimangaroa), and two daughters, Mesdames S. Shedden and Payne.

The appointment of LieutenantColonel John F. Fardell, of Reading, England, as general manager of the Christchurch Tramways, was confirmed at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the board. Mentioning high military qualifications held by Colonel Fardell, the chairman of the board, Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon, said the board felt it had secured a man who would bring new life to the tramway system in Christchurch. —P.A.

The death of John Nestor, aged 75, occurred suddenly at his home in Kokiri last evening. Born at Callaghans, Kumara, Mr. Nestor had' lived all his life on the Coast. He was a well known blacksmith and worked for 20 years at Kotuku and 20 years at Baxter’s Siding. He was also well known as a poet. He leaves his wife; four sons, Noel (Kotuku), Dan (Ruru). Eric (Kokiri), Martin (Wellington) ; three daughters, Mrs. A. Ferguson (Levin), Mrs. A. Brown (Runanga), and Miss Lena Nestor (Kokiri). The funeral takes .place at Karoro to-morrow.
