GREYMOUTH TROTTING CLUB. Following is the report which will be presented to the annual meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club, on Wednesday next, by the president, Mr E. McDonnell:—The Committee, in submitting to you the sth annual report and balance-sheet, are pleased to report a successful season despite the curtailment in the sport. The club was granted two days’ trotting and the Westland Club one day, and although adverse weather was experienced, the spring meeting was very successful, the sum of £41,585 10s passing through the totalisator for the two days, and the sum of £20,441 10s handled at the Westland meeting in January was very satisfactory, considering the unfavourable weather. Travel restrictions in rail and road have seriously hampered patrons, but with the increase in the petrol allowance, some relief may be occasioned in the coming season. The cessation of hostilities in Europe and the Pacific will strengthen the claims of the Conference for additional permits I and we look forward to an early restoration of our full trotting permits. During the year considerable maintenance and repair work was carred out on the stables and stalls, and in completion of the paddock at the south end of the main stand. The placing of a large quantity of filling on the track has resulted in its firstclass condition being maintained. During the year the death occurred of Mr J. Steer, a former Committeeman and treasurer of the Club for many years, and our symathy is extended'to his relatons. The balance-sheet shows a loss of £284 15s 2d on the 1944-45 year.

NORTH ISLAND NOTES W. J. Broughton’s Wanganui engagements include Magnus Lux, Battle Survey, Keen Play, and Bridge Acre, and he will ride Al-Sirat in the Guineas on the second day. At Awapuni the other morning on a soft track the best run was that of Theolateral (W. J. Broughton) and Czarina (Rout) over five furlongs, and they did well to run the distance in 1.15, maintaining, an even pace. One of the most interesting trials, that of Solver (Tattersail) and Reversion (’Waddell) over seven furlongs. They began well, and Reversion went kindly to lead to the five furlongs post in 32 2-ssec. They were home the last three in 46 3-ssec. to complete in 1.49. Specialist (Andrews'* and Kelmont sprinted four in 58.3-ssec, the last three in 44sec. Lady’ Spiral (Broughton) took 1.16 2-5 ,and Tremello (G. R. Tattersail) and Fen (A. G. Waddell) 1.16 4-5 for five furlongs. Langue d’Or (Tattersail) began quietly from the mile. Vivid Night (W. J. Stevens) joining him short of the five furlongs peg, and the latter came home in 1.18. the last three in better than 45sec. Vivid Night worked well. Merger (J. P. Bowness was in front, of, Tid-Apa (H. Thompson) at the end of six furlongs in 1.32. Lord Bradbury (Broughton) covered five, but was never off the bit. Red Glare went once round, but was not after time. Kaitoa (Tattersail) and Alethea (Sellers) sprinted three furlongs in 44 2-ssec., and Yalta (Broughton), in company with Purple Dawn (Thompson), went well in running the distance in 43sec. Yasda . (Sellers) and Rcnascor (Boreham) took 46sec. _ . j 1 At Wanganui, All Bav sprinted three furlongs in 38’sec.. and did it nicelv. The first two furlongs were run ‘in 25sec. This Pharleron Bay filly has grown into a good type, and she has shown ability to begin smartly and run straight. She is likely to beat more than will beat her in the Debutant Stakes. Alright has had only one gallop since resuming, ana that over a short course. He sweated profusely, but the effort appears to have livened him up.' The Inflation o-elding is in great heart. Master Francis went six furlongs alone, registering 25sec. for the first two furlongs, and completing in 1.19 j me full distance. Michael put in two rounds of useful pace work. The Broifort gelding is to run in the maiden to-day. . Caaka failed to show up at his last start, and he will need to make some improvement if he is to hold a v, inning chance in his division of the Tria] Handicap at the Avondale. He went good races late last season and may do better, for he is looking well aS Stony Broke was cond (identic backed for the Waihi Hack Handicap at New Flymouth, but after being slow away and making up his ground nicely he stopped in the bad going on the bend. He is likely to be better on his home track at Wanganui. A race that may be confusing to stay-at-home speculators is the Henderson Hack Handicap at Avondale meeting. Several horses are likely to carry big support,. Kind'roon, Leigh

Hark, Odvaals, The Fake, and Old Scot, are also accepted for in the final event, the hack mile. In addition, General ■ Lytup is also among those remaining in the Avondale Guineas. The time appears to be ripe for clubs to refuse' duel acceptances. After his successful southern trip, covering a win at Awapuni and placings at Hastings and Trentham, Leigh Hark would appear to be the best proposition in the two hack events, the mile for preference. . Little has been heard of Broiedame since she competed at the Wellington Winter Meeting and the Taranakiowned galloper made only one appearance at Trentham, in the Whyte Handicap, when she .finished fourth. If she goes on the right way she will win a good prize. Kerry Lad was paid up for the Hendersoh Hack Handicap only, being withdrawn from the Guineas. This suggests that this three-year-old has not made the progress expected. Chung Chong, one of the ruling favourites for the Avondale Cup, was never a Prospect in the Jelliaoe Handicap, 1 mile, at the Pauranga Meeting. He was slow away from the. barrier and that deprived him of any chance. Further, hp bruised a foot during the race, but he seems all right now and is bowling along in good style. As he seems to have derived considerable benefit from his race at the recent Pakuranga Meeting, which was the second outing of his career, Stable Boy. will carry some sunport in his division of the Trial Handicap at Ellerslie. An Ellerslie maiden that has done well lately is Bay Jim. He had his first race at Ellerslie last month, when’ he ran right up to expectations, finishing fifth in his division of the hack event, a satisfactory debut. New four years old, he looks the right type for flat racing and jumping. A first foal, he is by Dink from Tip Toes, daughter of Tea Tray and the Catmint mare Dunae, who sprang a great surprise when she won the Great Northern Oaks 19 years ago. If Dumbo could get back to the form he displayed as a hurdler in his first outing over the sticks he would stand a winning chanc’e in any company. Unfortunately, he went off considerably. z
