At 7.40 a.m. yesterday morning the fire bell sounded an alarm at Kumara, an iron chimney at the residence of Mr W. Bishop, in Second Street, being afire, and a wall close to it being in danger. The Fire Brigade, with a good water supply, prevented any more than minor damage.

Seven appeals will be heard at Greymouth and one at Hokitika when the Christchurch Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee visits the West Coast during the first week in September. The appeals to be heard at Greymouth will include five by women directed to domestic work at the Grey River Hospital, one by a timber worker, and one by a worker objecting to a reduction in wages.

A warning has been issued by the Health Department that Gastro Enteritis has occurred to a consideraole extent, particularly in the Auckland province, and, as this disease may be dangerous, particularly old people and to young children, precautions should be taken. The spread of tne disease can occur through flies, and consequently the main preventive measures is cleanliness and the prevention of the breeding of flies, 'lhe incidence of the disease appears io have been particualrly severe in institutions where large numbers of persons have been in close contact. At the Tokanui Mental Hospital tne disease has been a contributory cause in the death of fifteen persons. Ten of these persons were debilitated by old age. —P.A.

Work preparatory to the provision of a tar-sealed footpath in Newcastle Street from Nelson Quay to Ward Street has been completed and similar work is now in hand on the block bounded by Hall, Fox, Clifford and Bright Streets, the commencement having been made in Hall Street, states the Borough Engineer (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid) in his monthly report. The concrete kerbing and channelling of the block bounded by Shakespeare, Marlborough and High Streets and Faroa Road has been completed and where the footpath was not ready for tar sealing during the past season, the necessary preparatory grading and metalling has now been completed. Convent Lane has been suitably graded preparatory to tar sealing and a run of top dressing has been applied to Marsden Road from the lower bridge to the borough boundary.

The steam roller, which was not use' l throughout the war years, except as a stand-by boiler for the gasworks, is under overhaul to enable its use on the work required in Marsden Road, Ida and Marlborough Streets, preparatory to resurfacing, states the Borough Engineer (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid) in his monthly report. Repairs have mostly been of a routine nature but the differential gears require considerable atention to obviate the possibility of breakdown in the course of the work referred to. The crusher is again in operation preparing metal for various works.
