CO-OP. FISHERY

The State Cabinet of New South Wales has approved of a scheme to reorganise the fishing industry by placing it on a co-operative basis. The present system of fish distribution is left in the hands of agents, who operate individually at the City Municipal Markets, not for the benefit of consumers, but for their own business interests. Fishermen are to receive Government assistance to establish co-opera-tive fish depots along the coast for the handling and storing of fish. Cooperative societies have already been formed on the far south . coast at Eden, Ulladulla and Shoalhaven. An association of these societies is to take over the marketing of fish in the very near future. In the meantime, because of the need to improve the poor marketing situation, the Government intends taking over the market, which is to be conducted by the Chief Secretary’s Department.
