N.Z. MINERS’ PAY RISE
TO BE MET BY STATE SUBSIDY. P.A. WESTPORT, August 23. The Mining Controller, Mr C. H. Benney, stated to-day that he had been advised by the Acting-Minister of Mines, Hon. J. O’Brien, that the Government has decided to meet the extra cost arising out of the recent increases of 7-d in hewing rates and Is 6d per shift to other workers, by means of a subsidy. The increase in the rates of pay approved by the Government in respect of State coal mines, and authorised by the Coal Mines Council foi the privately-owned mines, followed the pronouncement by the Arbitration Court, concerning v ages genera.-y, and it is retrospective to May 7 last. Mr Benney said, that .the subsidy would be computed on a tonnage basis to compensate for the actual increased cost, and that a circular setting out the procedure would be issued shoitiy by the Mines Department _
