.Returns from the Austral (N.Z.) Mining Company for the fortnight ended August 18 were: 306 ounces in ,142 hours.

A party of seven students from Victoria University College arrived b’’’ last evening’s express on a brief visit to Greymouth.

The Salvation Army were granted permission to hold a street appeal in Greymouth on October 19, at a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening. Permission was granted subject to the appeal not clashing with any earlier claim.

The manager of the Greymouth Municipal Abattoir in his report for July states that during the month the following stock • was examined: Bullocks, 216; sheep and lambs, 689; pigs, 6; calves, 55. Fees collected totalled £167 14s Id.

The Borough Council last evening received' a letter from Messrs Guinness and Kitchingham on behali ot Mr. H. N. Ellery, builder, objecting to the proposal to have a part of Karoro set aside as a residential area. Mr. Ellery, the letter stated, owned a block of land in the area and wished to retain the right to maintain a workship and joinery factory on his land. The matter was held over until Mr. Ellery, who is on. service, can present an appeal personally.

A meeting was held in Greymouth yesterday afternoon, under the auspices of the Westland District Progress League, to formulate plans for improved production on the West Coast. These plans are to be submitted to the Department of Scientific and Industrial ’ Research. Representatives of the Greymouth, Hokitika, Brunner and Runanga boroughs, the Westland and Grey counties, and the Forestry, Lands and Mines Departments attended the meeting.

Investments in National Savings hi the Westland district last week totalled £852 12s lid. The weekly quota is £lO9O. Investments at the ten offices, with surpluses and deficiencies in parenthesis, were: Hokitika £253'6s 6d (surplus £6B 6s 6d); Brunnerton £74 7s 7d (£24 7s 7d); Otira £8 7s (deficiency £1 13s); Blackball £44 14s 6d (£5 5s 6d); Kumara £ll (£14); Ross £3 2s (£2l 18s); Waiuta £3 Is (£2l 19s); Reefton £lB (£55); Runanga £2O 14s 6d (£79 5s 6d); Greymouth £3B 19s lOd (£l3l Os 2d). All offices were credited with reaching their quota by means of carry-overs from previous weeks.

Forty books were added to the adult section of the Greymouth Municipal Library and 122 to the junior library during . July, stated the librarian (Miss J. McLaughlin) in her monthly report. Two loan collections., one on economics and one on Canada have been received. Posters for the latter were supplied oy the Canadian High Commissioner in New Zealand'. A total of 5,051 books were borrowed from the library during July. This figure was made up as follows: Non-fiction, 626; Country Library Service, 1,321; fiction 2,017; rental, 696; junior, 391. Receipts for the month totalled £l5 18s 6d. The report stated that the decided increase in the number of junior books issued was adequate commentary on the need for library service to children in the community.

Gratitude to all those in the Armed Forces, the Merchant Navy, and all who had worked in New Zealand and elsewhere to bring aoout victory in the war was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Gorough Council, which decided to place this on record in the minutes. The Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) said that all citizens were gratified at the way in which Greymouth celebrations of victory had been carried out, also at the sobriety of the celebrations and the fact that there had been little damage to property.

The monthly report of the manager of the Gl’eymouth Municipal Gasworks (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) states that July showed the highest make yet attained, 5,403,000 feet, which was 250,000 cubic feet more than the previous highest month’s make, which was in June. With the change of the season, the demand was falling off, and shortly it would be possible to let No. 4 bed down and dismantle it preparatory to resetting. Cash receipts for July, totalled £1648 13s, an increase of £145 18s 3d -on receipts of July last year. Total receipts to J’uly were £5,837 10s lid, an increase of £493 Is lOd on the figures for the corresponding period last year.
