PERFORMANCE OF COAST TEAM. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. The West Coast basketball team’s first game against Hawke’s Bay Minor at the Dominion tournament yesterday was closely contested, and the result was in doubt till the final whistle. The half-time score was 9-7 in Coast’s favour.' Hawke’s Bay, with accurate shooting, soon equalised, an exciting game ending 16-15 in Coast’s favour. In this morning’s game the Coast team was constantly penalised , for personal, contact and blocking. This somewhat disconcerted the whole team, and was particularly reflected in erratic goal shooting. The final score was, Temuka 13, Coast 9. The second game of the day, against Wairoa, was very fast, and the teams were evenly matched. Coast’s field work in the first spell was superior, but missed opportunities at the goal allowed Wairoa to establish a 7-3 lead at half-time. Coast maintained the attack in the second spell, but shooting still compared unfavourably with that of their opponents, and the game ended, Wairoa 14, Coast 9. Coast’s centre play has been consistently good, and attack and defence have worked untiringly, but ■ there have been many penalties. Forwards have not attained the expected combination, and shooting so far has been erratic.
