The death occurred yesterday morning,) at the Westland Hospital, of Miss Stephens, a well-known school mistress, and a very popular woman in the district. She nad been ill for a long time. The news of her death was received with deep regret. The following Rugby football matches will be played at Hokitika on Saturday: —Senior: Cronadun (Reefton) v. St. Mary’s, 1.30 p.m.; Greymouth v. Westland, 2.45 p.m. Third grade: Excelsiors v. School, 1.30 p.m. More whitebait are being netted at Hokitika'. The retail price is 6s per pint One fisherman at the river mouth netted 10 pints yesterday afternoon, when many good catches were secured. Supplies will probably go forward to the markets regularly now. The Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock) presided over a large public meeting last night, when arrangements were finalised foi' a Victory ball on Thursday night, at the Soldiers’ Hall. It was decided to hold a juvenile ball the following night. Mesdames Doreen and Mclntyre were appointed to judge the dresses and to co-opt. others to assist in making awards. It was decided to make a charge of Is for each child, members of families of more than two children to be admitted for sixpence. The Mayor and Mr W. M. Fraser, assisted by Mr Macfarlane, are to act as doorkeepers. Mrs Boyd was requested to canvass for donations for prizes, and Mr E. W. Heenan to wait on business people for the same purpose. Mrs A. Stevenson and Mr Stephens were appointed to marshal the children for the grand victory march. The following ladies’, supper committee was set up: Mesdames I. Perry, T. Stuart, J. Mclntyre, Boyd, I. Preston, J. Monk, A. Stevenson, M. Lynch, C. James, A. Reeves, A. Fraser, and A. Stevens. The M.’sC. wall be Messrs B. Stephens and R. Cooper.
