WESTPORT NOTES
-(Our Own Correspondent) WESTPORT, August 15. The Rata sailed this morning for New Plymouth. The Titoki loaded coal to-day: for Nelson. The Kiwitea is loading coal for Auckland, and is not expected to complete until tonight owing to the class of coal needed for her cargo being in short supply. The Karu is due to-uay from Wellington with cargo. Mr W. Cummings nas returned from Christchurch. ■ x Messrs P. O’Dea and T. Hansby leave to-morrow for Christchurch. Sergt. S. Marshall and Mrs Marshall returned last evening from Christchurch. Mr R. Roberts, a former resident of Westport, arrived yesterday from Nelson on a visit to relatives. Mr and Mrs J. H. Whisker, Christchurch, are visiting Westport, and are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. E. G. Knight. Mr and Mrs T. Haitley, of Methven, formerly of Westport, are visiting relatives here. Miss C. McGrath arrived from Christchurch last evening. Rev. A. McNeur returned from Greymouth last evening after attending a meeting of the- Westwind Presbytery. The death occurred recently at Denniston of Mr Percy Cole, aged 66 years. A native of Geelong, Australia, the late Mr Cole had resided at Denniston for the past 30 years. He was a single man, and has no known relatives in the Dominion. One of the fast diminishing band of pioneers of the West Coast, Mrs Anna Maria Cain, aged 79 years, died at Birchfield last evening. The late Mrs Cain was born at South Spit, Hokitika, and had lived at Birchfield for .the past 45 years. She is survived by five sons, Charles (Fetone), William (Nelson), John (Christchurch), Herbert and Spencer (Birchfield), and four daughters, Mesdames E. Hammond (Birchfield), A. Willis (England), A. Fox and M. Seymour (Westport). Her husband predeceased her 14 years ago. Of a total consignment of 127,141 super feet of timber shipped to the North Island from Westport recently 110,248 super feet were from the Karamea district. Large quantities of timber are being milled in that district, a good portion of it being railed to South Island centres. Jack Alexander, Buller Rugby fiveeighth selected to play in the South Island team, fractured his right wrist while working at Karamea during the week-end. He may now be unavailable for the team at Auckland on Saturday week. ’Tobacco, cigarettes and produce which has been in short supply locally for some time, is expected to arrive from Wellington to-day on the Karu.
