AUSTRALIAN. SERVICES (Rec. 9.40) SYDNEY, August 14 The Federal Government has decided that a national thanksgiving.;, service for the end of the Pacific war ; will be held on the second day of the two holidays. The service will be; held in the War Memorial at Can--' berra. and it will be attendee by the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, the Ministers and the members of Parliament. The Governor General, the Duke of Gloucester has been invited to attend. Sndcial thanksgiving services will be held in all of the churches on victory in the Pacific Day. The schools will close for two days following the announcement of the cessation of hostilities. HOLIDAY FOOD PROBLEM (Rec. 940) SYDNEY, August 14 ' A difficult food problem has been caused by uncertainty about the two days’ holiday for the celebration of peace. Both the retailers and wholesalers of perishable food are in.' doubt about what quantities they should buy and the consumers are likely to suffer. The position is • complicated by the fact that to-mor- - row (Wednesday) is any case the bakers’ holiday. It is probable that most of the city restaurants will be closed on both days of the holiday. , — Not Enough Beer ! FOR TWO DAY JAMBOREE (Rec. 9.10) SYDNEY, August 14 In. Australia ■ all of the hotels will be closed on the first day of the holiday for peace, but will open on the second day.' There is not sufficient beer available for both days, and it is thought; that on the second day, the rush for. beer will not be so great, and that the drinking will be more rational. PEACE ILLUMINATIONS. NORTH ISLAND ELECTRIC RESTRICTIONS TO BE LIFTED. P.A. WELLINGTON, August 14. The restrictions on the use of electricity which apply to the North Island because of the power shortage, are to be lifted for the two days of the peace celebrations, but they will apply again as soon as the celebrations are over. The Minister of Works (Mr Semple) stated to-night that the restrictions to be lifted for the two days apply to the lighting of the shop fronts, the streets, the cinemas, and the like. But no special illuminations will be allowed. The restrictions do not apply: to the South Island. Special illuminations therefore will be possible there. SALE OF BREAD MINISTER’S APPEAL’ TO GROCERS AND OTHER VENDORS P.A. WELLINGTON, August 14 The Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) issued a statement to-night appealing to all grocers and other vendors of bread to open their shops for the sale of bread for two hours on the morning following the announcement of peace. “It will have been observed in the newspapers,” said Mr. Sullivan, “that master bai<ers and their workers have agreed to ■ bake bread on the evening of the day of the announcement for delivery the following morning, and lassume that retailers will open as suggested to dispose of bread on the morning of delivery. I have been in touch with the Council of the New Zealand Master Grocers’ Association, and full concurrence is expressed with the above appeal. I would also like to reiterate an appeal which has been made to retailers of essential foodstuffs to make suitable., arrangements for urgent necessary sales to cover the holiday period.” COBDEN CELEBRATIONS. A meeting to organise victory celebrations for children at Cobden is. being held at the State school this evening at 8 o’clock, the members of the School Committee, and Home and School Association, and all others interested being invited.
