Mr. S. Anisy arrived by last evening’s express from Christchurch,
Hon. J. Ryall, M.L.C. returned to Greymouth by last evening’s express.
A.C. 1 W. N. Rutherford arrived at Greymouth on Monday on furlough after service in the Pacific.
Mr. M. C. Ellery began work yesterday morning with the Servicemen’s Employment Division of the National Service Department, Greymouth.
Mr. J. Mulcare was granted six months’ leave of absence at a meeting of the Grey Hospital Board last evening. It was decided, to send a letter wishing him a speedy recovery.
Major S. E. West, formerly.of the engineering- staff of the Grevmouth Borough Council, has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and attached to the engineers of the British Fourteenth Army, South-east Asia Command.
The death has occurred in Auckland of Rear-Admiral Robert Neale Lawson, G. 8., R.N. (retired), who for two years in the last war was flapcaptain to the Admiralty of the Grand Fleet (Earl Jellicoe). He was 72, and had spent part of his retirement in New Zealand.—P.A.

The death is announced from Palmerston North of Mr. Alfred Seifert, aged 68, one of the best known figures in the Manawatu. Mr. Seifert was engaged in flaxmilling and farming, and was a former president of the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association. He was born in Canterbury, and was married in 1900 to a daughter of Mr. William Blundell. He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter, five brothers and a sister.—P.A.
The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of a formei’ well-known resident of Greymouth, Mrs M. Hall, aged 73, after a long illness. Of a kindly and generous nature, the late Mrs Hall had gained the esteem of a wide circle of friends, both in Greymouthr and Christchurch, who will regret to learn of her passing. Besides her husband, Mr T. Hall, who was formerly chief mechanician in the Greymouth Post Office, she leaves a family of five daughters and three sons. Mrs L. Richardson, of Greymouth, is a daughter, and she will be extended sympathy in her loss.
The death occurred on Monday at the Westland Hospital of Mr. Patrick Sarsfield Heslan, of Lower Kokatahi. He was aged 57. A son of the late Bernard Heslan (a pioneer of the Kokatahi Valley), Mr. Heslan was a well-known farmer in that district, where he was born and had lived all his life, with the exception of a period spent overseas in the 191418 war. Besides his widow, he leaves one young daughter and two young sons, also two sisters, Mrs. Bert O’Brien and Miss Kate Heslan (both of Kokatahi). The funeral will take place this afternoon at Hokitika Cemetery.

The Governor-General, at Government Flouse yesterday afternoon, presented, on behalf of the King, awards to tw» members of the staff of the hospital ship “Oranje”, in recognition of signal servcie rendered by them in the care and comfort of New Zealand and Australian servicemen when returning to their homelands in the hospital ship. The recipients were Colonel J. C. Gerards, of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army (Medical Service), to whom His Excellency presented the insignia of Honorary Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire; and Matron Miss K. A. J. Van der Roest, of the Netherlands Indies Red Cross, who received the insignia of Honorary Member of the Royal Red Cross. In addition to Lady Newall, among those present at the ceremony were the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser; the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones; the ConsulGeneral for the Netherlands, Mr. M. F. Vigeveno; the Master of the “■Oranje,” Captain B. A. Potjar; members of His Excellency’s staff, and representatives of the New Zealand Military Forces.—P.A.
