NAVAL BOMBARDMENT OF BALIK PAPAN. (Rec. 11.55). NEW YORK, J'une 26. Tokio radio says: Thirty surface units, including cruisers and destroyers, are bombarding Balik Papa.i, while minesweepers are clearing minefields, but there are no indications of a landing. BORNEO LINK-UP EXPECTED WASHINGTON, June 25. General MacArthur’s communique states: Our ground, air and naval units have continued the reduction of enemy forces in Borneo. They destroyed' four , coastal vessels and damaged others under construction in the Pontianak area, and heavily hit Balik Papan. They set fire to fuel dumps on the northern coast. NEW YORK, June 25 Tokio radio stated that civilians had been evacuated inland from Balik Papan. An Allied communique stated: The first Allied link-up since the landings on the oil island of Borneo may soon materialse, according to battle reports from Borneo, which put Australian forward units striking south from the cantured oil field of Seria. within 25 miles of other Australian troops in the northern oil -field area of Sarawak. Australian forces are striking new blows against Japan’s dwindling oil supplies in Borneo. They are making new advances in the northern Sarawak oil fields, while American bomber fighter squadrons attack the great oil centre of Balik Papan, on the east coast. NEW LANDING. ON TERNATE ISLAND. (Rec. 8.55). NEW YORK, June 26. Tokio radio says: Allied forces invaded Ternate Island, ten miles west of Halmahera Island. Garrison forces at present are engaged in intense fighting with landed enemy; troops.
