WAGES INCREASE P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, June 19 Under the am»enclment to the New Zealand Retail Chemists’ Assistants’ Award, which has been announced by the Court of Arbitration, managers, qualified and unqualified assistants will receive an increase of Ils a week, and casual workers will be paid an extra Sid an hour. Wellington, M'arlborough, Nelson, Westland, Canterbury, and Otago and Southland retail grocers’ assistants and drivers will also receive an increase in' wages. The minimum wage for senior assistants is increased by Ils a week Junior rates in some cases have been increased by amounts varying from 2s to 7s 6d a week Meal money has been increased by 6d, and is now 2s or 2s 6d. A worker employed on a travelling shop who is away at night from his home will be allowed 9s for bed and breakfast and 3s for each other meal every day while away. In each case the new wage rates are subject to the cost of living bonuses', and lhe orders shall be deemed to have come into force on April 1, 1945.

WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN DEAD. P.A. BLENHEIM, June 20.

The death occurred suddenly at Blenheim. of Mr. Christopher Timothy Smith, solicitor, and Mayor of Blenheim since 1938, at the age of 48 years. He was Chairman of the Marlborough Provincial Patriotic Council, War Loan Committee, Regional Planning Council. Joint Council of the Red Cross and tne Order of St. John, and a member of the Red Cross Executive. He had served continuously on the Blenheim Borough Council since 1923. He represented Taranaki and Marlborough at Rugby. He leaves a wife and four children.
