OKARITO NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent] Recent visitors to Wataroa include Messrs Butler and party, McKenzie and party (Wataroa), Lysons and party (F'ranz Josef Glacier). A party of fishermen from Wataroa landed a good catch of flounders during the week. Owing to the mouth of the lagoon being shallow, fish are not very plentiful at present. With timber in big demand, the Great Forest still stands. It is reported that a mill will be started there withing the next 12 months. Hard frosts have been experienced locally during the past twelve days. The gold diggers are hoping to see the weather break, so as they can get on with beach-combing. Dr Falla, of the Canterbury Museum, was surprised to know that the kiwi’ that landed at Okarito was a South Island brown, and is only known to exist at Milford Sound.
