“HAW HAW” CHARGED
UNDER 594 YEAR OLD TREASON ACT. LONDON, June 18. William Joyce (“Lord Haw-Haw”) appeared to-day in the Bow Street Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of high treason. Joyce, who is 39 years old, was described as of no fixed home and no occupation. The courtroom was packed when the central doors opened and Joyce was brought in from the cells. He entered the dock, stood at attention, and bowed to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Sir Bertrand Watson). The Director of Public Prosecutions (Mr H. A. Morgan) rose and read tOjthe hushed Court the charge against Joyce. The charge is brought under a law enacted in 1351. Joyce was charged with treason “in that between September 2, 1939, and- May 28, 1945, beipg a person owing allegiance to His Majesty the King, he adhered to the King’s enemies elsewhere than in the King’s realm, to wit, in the German realm, contrary to the Treason Act of 1351”.
Joyce applied for legal aid, which was granted. Joyce was in court only, eight minutes before he was remanded for a week.
A solicitor, Charles B. V. Head, after Court proceedings, “ was called on to defend Joyce. He conferred with Joyce before he was taken to Brixton prison. The solicitor will have the Same privilege as all defending solicitors of interviewing a client -privately in prison during a remand.
Joyce’s cell at the Bow Street police station was floodlit all night as a security measure, says the Press Association. Big doors leading to the station yard, which are usually open, were kept closed and were opened only for the passage of police cars. Thej'- were guarded by two policemen. It was stated that two, possibly three witnesses would have to come from abroad. When the hearing began it would continue day and night if necessary, so that Joyce might come up for trial at the July sessions.
