AUTOMOBILE ASSN.

MONTHLY MEETING

[Mr. P. C. Heaphy presided at the monthly meeting of the West Coast branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association held last evening. Also present were Messrs G. R. Harker, W. T. Blackie, H. G. Carter, B. W. Caulton, W. P. Hambleton, W. Vallance, P. Renton, R. K. Holmes, C. Ross, R-Ross, G. Sutherland, Dr. W. McKay, J. Chapman (patrol officer) and the secretary, Mr. W. F. Hadley. Correspondence was dealt with as follows: -—

The secretary of the Te Kinga residents’ committee, wrote asking for the support' of the Association, in the erection of a traffic bridge over the Crooked River. The President stated that the estimated cost, of the bridge was £5,000, and the County Council were not in a position to finance the project. The milling area in that locality would be worked out before long. ” The President said there appeared to be a difference of opinion among residents as to the necessity for the proposed bridge. The action of the secretary in advising the committee to refer the matter back to the County Council was approved. From the manager of N.Z. Road Services stating that, with the recent floods in the Hari Hari district, it had been found necessary to send a man ahead, to ascertain if the road was passable. The manager asked for the installation of a telephone at Mr. Mitchell’s residence at the Big Wanganui. It was decided that represenations be made to the Public Works Department to have the telephone installed. The County Clerk wrote stating that work on Wilson’s road at Camerons wanted to be attended to. Regarding the erection of posts in Grogan’s Lane, the Greymouth Borough Council stated that enquiries were being made from owners of adjoining properties, before proceeding with the work.

The Town Clerk, Hokitika, wrote stating that the pot holes on the road to the station had been filled in as requested, and that the work of tar sealing around the approach to the station would be carried out curing the summer months. Mr. J. B. Discaciati was appointed to represent the Association on the petrol supply board at Reefton. The secretary reported that the work of putting in the white lines on Griffen’s Hill was to be carried out.

Mr. Carter brought up the. necessity of having the white lines in other areas repainted. It was decided that the authorities be approached on the matter. The President reported that members had lent their cars willingly for the purpose of entertaining the officers and men of the naval vessels, which recently visited Greymouth. The secretary reported that at the last meeting at Christchurch which he attended, a letter from the Buller branch, asked that the name of the West Coast branch be changed. The question had caused considerable discussion. The state of the crossing at. the Kumara Railway station was discussed and it was decided that the secretary write to the Department concerning the matter. Mr. R. K. Holmes brought up the question of bad visibility at Bundi Road near Camerons. It was. decided to approach the County Engineer regarding the matter. The Hokitika delegation reported that the road to Lake Kanieri had been put in order as requested by the Association.
