STRONGMAN COLLIERY

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. MINERS' REAFFIRM POLICY. Following upon a refusal of the management to implement the policy, of the Union relative to the filling away of loose coal in old workings, at the Strongman colliery, the miners at both Liverpool and Strongman mines returned home yesterday morning. Later, at a mass meeting of the men held in the Miners 1 ! Hall, it was decided to reaffirm the policy of the Union and to insist upon the filling away; of all loose coal in these old workings, thus removing the recurring danger of fires. Both mines will remain idle until the management fulfils this policy and falls into line with the request of the Union, which the members regard as reasonable and as deserving of immediate adoption in view of the fact that the lives of miners are at stake. It is pointed out by members ’hat the Union has no wish to see Runanga relegated to the list of “ghost” mining towns. At a mine mouth meeting, rhe Strongman miners expressed their complete faith and confidence in Mr Chas. Hunter, Government Mines Inspector, a confidence that was. reaffirmed at the mass meeting of both mines in the hall. There will be no work either at Strongman or Liverpool mines today. WESTPORT COAL COMING TO GREY. FOR SHIPMENT. P.A. WESTPORT, May 14. Consequent on a strike at two State mines in th e Grey: area, coal is being railed from Westport to Greymouth to load a vessel in' port there. It is pointed out in mining circlets that this will deprive Westport mines of the use of many coal trucks, which will take probably three days going to Greymouth and returning. It is said that it would be better to bring the vessel to Westport and allow trucks to be used on shorter runs.
