ABORTION CHARGES

SETTLE FOUND NOT GUILTY CHRISTCHURCH, May 10. After a retirement of two hours and a half, a jury in the Supreme Court to-day found George William Bettie, chemist, aged 56, not guilty on three charges of having on August 31, November 23 and December 18 of last year used an instrument or other means on three different women with intent to procure a miscarriage. It was Bettie’s second trial on these charges, a jury which heard the case in February having been unable to agree on these counts but having found him not guilty on a fourth Mr Justice Northcroft was on the bench, Mr A. W. Brown prosecuted, and Mr L. P. Leary, of Auckland, with him Mr A. H. Cavell, appeared for Bettie.
