WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent! WESTFORT, April 26. The Karu arrived on Tuesday evening from Wellington to load coal for that port. Loading operations were interrupted several times yesterday by rain, and again to-day. The Kaitoa is due to-day from New Plymouth, to load for Nelson. The Kaimai is dtle to-day rrorn Wellington, and is to load for that port. The Wingatui and Poolta arc due to-morrow from Wellington, both vessels to load coal for Wellington. The Kiwitea is due at the week-end from Welling-, ton and is to load for Picton. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Conciliation Council as an assessor in a Hospital Boards’ Association dispute with -engine drivers, firemen and greasers employed at all’public hospitals. Mr J. Woodcock, of Wellington, is visiting his mother, Mrs W. Woodcock, Domett Street. Sergeant T. O’Gorman, recently returned from the Middle East, is due to arrive here at the week-end. Mr Patrick, Director-General of the Fost and Telegraph Department, accompanied by Mr W. Churchill and Mr Twiss, who have been visiting the district, left this morning lor Greymouth.. , , , Major H. Campbell was elected mesident of the Westport Returned Seivices’ Association at the annual meeting held last night. Mr A. Williams, the sitting president, not seeking reelection. Other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mr E. Potter; treasuier Maior B. Mathewson, secielaiy, Mr W Mann; committee: Messrs Jones, MacGregor, Carlson, Eorlase, Davis, Farrell, Mann, Wilson, Falla, Douthett, Palmer and Cunliffe. The death occurred on Tuesday, evening of a well-known lesident of Westport, Mr Edward Jones, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs T. Vickery The late Mr Jones was 75 years of age, and had resided at Westport for 40 vears. He was a native of Wales, and for many years had been employed on the waterfront, until his retirement some years ago. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs W. Rennie. Mrs T. Vickery, Mrs G. Bly,th, Mrs T. Shaw, junr., Westport, and Mrs H. Fayen, of Auckland. Flis wife predeceased him by some years. The Anzac Day ceremony at Westport was marred bj’ cold and wet weather, and the parade in the morning was poorly attended. A service was conducted in St. James’ Theatre by the Westport Ministers’ Association there being a fair attendance of the public and the Returned Services’ Association, also Girl Guides and Boy S’couts. Rev. H. G. Erown gave the occasional address and the Mayor, Mr J. M. Robertson, also delivered a short address. Captain Rawcliffe, of the Salvation Army, led the Lord’s Praypr and Rev. S. Gorney pronounced the Benediction. Wreaths were placed at the Memorial gates at a later service and were then taken to Orowaiti Cemetery and placed on the graves of returned soldiers by members of the R.S.A.

For the past 36 hours Westport experienced a strong south-westerly wind, which at times, reached gale force. Accompanied by rain and hail showers during Wednesday afternoon and night, the wind caused considerable damage to fences and buildings in the town area> and this morning the wind reached its height, and further damage in the business area was caused. Iron fences and roofing iron was blown off and hasty, repairs had to be carried out before any further damage was caused by rain.
