BARRYTOWN PIG CLUB
. SUCCESS OF BREEDING. [ A good deal of success has been achieved by the Barrytown Pig Club ’ in its efforts to encourage the breeding of higher grade pigs. The club ; was formed on May 4. 1938, and a ; Large White sow for breeding pur- ! poses was bought from Lincoln Agri- - cultural College. When her first lit- ! ter was ready for weaning they were ' balloted for by club members,, and Mr ' P. Wafer drew a sow which was ' named Barryton Baroness the First. • This sow’s first litter of nine was not ■ recorded, • but they averaged 1581bs dressed weight at five months three weeks. The following eight litters were recorded, all mailing first grade with a good margin. According to the Supervisor’s 1943-44 report, this sow had put up the best pedigree litter recording of any sow of any breed in the Dominion for consistency as grade one. In nin o litters she farrowed 110 piglets, and reared 81, most of which were sold as registered pedigree stock, a good percentage going to Can- • terbury, and some as far as Timaru. Unfortunately on her tenth litter she I contracted milk fever, and nine of , her litter of 12 died. Sows from her litters which have been recorded are putting up good performances—if not first grade, then close to it every time—under ordinary farm conditions, showing that she has passed her good qualities on to her stock.
