With the new financial year now quotas continue to be maintained at a satisfactory level. Last week, 226 towns recorded successes, five more than in the preceding week. All the principal centres were successful, and in seventeen of the nineteen postal districts, the full district quota was reached.

Amendments to the Sea _ Fisheries Regulations gazetted last night make provision for the extension of the closed season for the taking of seals for a further three years to March 31 1948. They also establish a closed season for the taking of toheioas on the Ninety Mile Beach until March 31, 1946.
To take part in the annual competitions to-morrow and on Sunday, »of the Catholic Secondary Schools of the Canterbury Diocese, teams from the Marist and Convent Schools, Greymouth, and from the Hokitika Convent School have left for Christchurch. The trophy for the winning team is the Bishop Lyons Shield, and competitions will be held in debating, elocution, impromptu speaking, oratory, religious questions and tennis. The subject for the debate, is “That War Can be Prevented.” 'Taking the affirmative, the Greymouth Marist Brothers’ School meet Xavier CoUege (Christchurch); and Hokitika Convent A meet St. Bede’s College B.
