amputated above the knee at the Auckland Hospital on May 13, 1943, alleged that this operation had become necessary because of negligent and unskilful treatment, by the staff after an operation for a torn cartillage of the knee. He alleged that gangrene had been brought on by too tight bandaging or by a tourniquet. The Hospital Board, denying negligence, submitted that the trouble was caused by a rare condition of the artery known as vavaspasm, for which no one was to blame. The case was tried by Mr Justice Callan and a special jury. After a retirement of three hours and a half, the jury found for the Hospital Board, and judgment was entered accordingly, with costs.
