MILLERTON NOTES

Correspondent] Mrs T. Pollock has returned from a visit to Greymouth. Mrs T. Grace, Mr and Mrs F. Cooper, junr., Mrs Plummer, and Messrs G.’ and T. Plummer have returned after visiting Christchurch. Mr B. Watson is visiting Christchurch; also Mr R. Jack. Miss K. Ireland, of Nelson, is visiting her parents here. Sergeant Observer J. Herdman, who has been on leave, leaves for Wellington during the week. Mrs T. Murray is paying a visit to Christchurch. Mr Thornton, Secretary of the Nelson Education Board, visited Millerton and was interviewed by Mr C. Orman (Secretary of the School Conimittee) ‘on matters in connection with the new school. A special miners’ meeting was held at the bath house on Monday morning to discuss a circular from the National Secretary re the working of back Saturdays, the King's Birthday, and MAy Day. The men decided to work on back Saturdays as requested, and on the King’s Birthday, but to recognise May Day by not working. County Councillors F. C’onnew (Millerton and Stockton riding), and J. Taylor (Granity and Ngakawau) addressed on Sunday, a public meelmg at which Mr W. Watson presided, and gave an account of their activities as members of the Council. The meeting was to consider the new method of transport between Seddonvilie in its relation to Millerton and Stockton residents. Mr T. Grace was appointed secretary, and Messrs J. Orman and W. Watson were delegated to attend a meeting next Sunday at Stockton, and to report the findings of that meeting at a further meeting in Millerton. The meeting discussed th e question of setting up a Buller Power Board, and signified willingness to support the proposal. The site for the proposed carbonisation plant on the West Coast was also discussed, the opinion being that it required a thorough investigation, and that if Buller coal is the most suitable the plar/' shornd be in this district. It was resolved to ask the Buller Trades Council and Miners’ Central Committee jo take up the matter. The chairman stated that Mrs Dunningham and Mr McDonald would visit the district on Tuesday with the object of setting up a W.E.A. class. At the annual meeting of the local Women’s Institute, Mrs Strang presiding, the following officers were elected: President, Mrs Jackson; vicepresident, Mrs Strang; secretary, Mrs Wood; treasurer, Mrs Cooper. It was decided to continue with donations for soldiers’ parcels. Mrs Strang was accorded a vote of thanks, also a nonmember for monthly soldiers’ parcel donations. Mrs Watson was appointed delegate and Mrs Jackson reporter, to attend the half-yearly district meeting, to be held at Seddonvilie on Saturday, April 28.
