CONSCRIPTION

CANADIAN ELECTION ISSUE

(Rec, 10.10) OTTAWA, April 9 Speaking on defence estimates, Mr. Liguori Lacombe (Independent) told the Blouse of Commons that the Government’s statement that Canadian participation in the Pacific war would be on a voluntary basis, was only election propaganda. Mr. Lacombe expressed the opinion that total conscription, as it already exists will be applied to the Pacific theatre, the same as to the other war theatre. The Prime Minister, Mr. MacKenzie King, had pretended that it would be voluntary, but he had violated so many promies that it was impossible to attach any faith to his statements. If the Government were sincere, it would annouce the repeal of of the Mobilisation Act. Mr. Lacombe declared that Canadian participation in the San Francisco conference would mean that conscription would be enforced even in peace time.
