PEACE FEELERS

WASHINGTON, March 16. President Roosevelt stated at a press conference that the Government had not received anything at all in the way of German peace- feelers. He was asked if there was any truth in the reports that Von Rundstedt had asked for an armistice or in the peace rumours from Stockholm. He said he Understood that the British Foreign Office had had no peace feelers either. The United States Department o“ State later disclosed that Britain did report the Stockholm peace gesture last week. This was filed away as a more or less meaningless incideni:. Apparently it did not reach top officials of the State Department, much less the White House. Officials explained that similar reports had been arriving weekly for many months. LONDON, March 16 The “Daily Mail said: The German Legation in Stockholm is credited with inspiring a report circulating in the city that von Ribbentrop and Field-Marshal Keitel are due m Stockholm to-morrow. There is no confirmation of this" report, which is regarded with considerable caution in responsible quarters. It is worth putting on record however, in view of earlier peace feelers through Swedish sources.” It is authoritatively stated in London that Germany earlier this month did attempt to establish political contact with British representatives at Stockholm in order to discuss possibilities of settlement. This statement follows the report on similar lines appearing in the Swedish press. Tly peace feelers were ignored All information in this connection was/communicated by Britain Io her Russian and American Allies. The move is read as, a typical effort on the part of the 'Germans to sow dlssention among the Allies.
