A COMB-OUT

AUSTRALIAN FORCES’ HOME STAFFS SYDNEY, March 18. A drastic reduction of headquarters staffs in all States, but particularly in Melbourne, is understood to be planned by the three fighting services, says the Sydney “Sun’s” Melbourne correspondent. ■ It is. stated plans are being prepared for the transfer of a large number of personnel to permit others, in older age groups, and with longer service, to return to civil life. This comb-out is probably associated with a review of staffs in all Federal departments, recently made by a special sub-committee of Cabinet.’ Administrative heads had the staff totals under examination for some time. They have agreed that appreciable reductions could be made without impairing service efficiency .It is suggested that younger fit personnel should be diverted to more forward areas, so that ultimately the strain on those in operational establishments would be reduced
